Joint Convention held in Imphal to ensure success of Feb 12 general strike

Imphal, January 29 2026:
A joint convention of the Coordinating Body of Trade Unions, Manipur, and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), Manipur, was held today at Irawat Bhawan in Imphal to plan for the success of the upcoming nationwide general strike scheduled for February 12, 2026.The convention, attended by representatives from several prominent unions and associations, aimed to gamer full support for the strike across the State.
The leaders present included S Yaima, working president, AITUC Manipur State Committee; L Sotinkumar, general secretary, AITUC Manipur S'tate Committee; Ksh Shanti, secretary, CITU Manipur; Y Ranapratap, president, INTUC Manipur; Kh Gyaneshwor, secretary, TUCC Manipur; K Manoranjan, secretary, UTUC Manipur; N Singhajit, president, Manipur Loumi Lup; Sarat Salam, secretary, Manipur Loumi Lup; M Joykumar, president, All Manipur State Government Employees Confederation; S Vijay, president, Bank Employees Federation of India, Manipur; L Sarat, president, Manipur Government Employees Federation; and N Rupchandra, president, All Manipur Airtel Workers Union.
Speaking on the occasion, L Sotinkumar emphasized the importance of the joint convention, which brought together central trade unions, farmer organisations, and associations from sectors like banking, BSNL, and LIC.
He stated that the convention would make several resolutions and plan the necessary actions for the success of the February 12 general strike.
The primary objective of the general strike is to protest the Central Government's perceived disregard for the demands of workers and farmers.
Primary issues driving the strike are- the consolidation of 29 central labor laws into four codes-Code on Wages (2019), Industrial Relations Code (2020), Code on Social Security (2020), and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (2020); modification of MGNREGA; Government's failure to address the minimum support price (MSP) for farmers; acceleration of privatization initiatives; and prioritization of employers' interests.
