Imphal, October 28 2012:
Infantry Day was celebrated at Red Shield Division yesterday.
In a solemn ceremony, Maj Gen KK Sinha and troops of Red Shield Division laid wreath at the war memorial to honour the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Infantry Day is celebrated every year on October 27 to commemorate the maiden gallant action of the Infantry in wake of our Independence.
On this day 51 years ago, the first soldiers of Indian Army landed in Srinagar and resolutely defended Kashmir thereby preventing it from falling into enemy hands.
His Excellency Maharaja Hari Singh signed the instrument of accession to India on October 26, 1947 when Baramula was overrun and Pakistani raiders were within 30 miles from Srinagar.
At 5 am on October 27, the First Battalion the Sikh Regiment hastily mustered from internal security duties, were flown in to Srinagar.
These valiant soldiers fought a gallant action reversing the tide of the battle and saving Kashmir as part of Independent-India.
To commemorate thus brave action by the Infantryman in independent India, Infantry Day is celebrated every year.
Speaking on the occasion, Maj Gen KK Sinha, exhorted all Infantrymen to carry forward the cherished values of honour, courage and valour and strive to achieve greater glories in the service of the nation, said a press release.
