Moirang, April 10 2026:
In a significant achievement for a Government hospital that often lacks the facilities of private hospitals, Bishnupur District Hospital successfully performed a total hip replacement surgery.
The surgery was carried out on Moiranghem Devdas Singh (46), son of the late M Ibohanbi of Phubala Makha Maning Leikai, on March 26 last.
Devdas had injured his left leg when he was around 13 or 14 years old while playing cricket.
While the injury would sometimes improve, it would also flare up with pain.
However, the condition worsened some years back, making it difficult for him to lift heavy objects or engage in strenuous work.
After consulting orthopaedic surgeon Dr Moirangthem Nando, he was advised to undergo a total hip replacement surgery.
The surgery was performed on March 26, this year.
Devdas said that all the pain has disappeared after the surgery.
He, however, said that he hasn't attempted walking yet since the surgery was performed recently.
Devdas said he would have spent over Rs 3 lakh if the surgery had been performed at a private hospital or outside Manipur.
He expressed pride in undergoing the surgery at a Government hospital without incurring such high costs.
Saying that the doctors and nurses at Bishnupur District Hospital are approachable and easy to consult, he thanked the hospital for their care.
Medical Superintendent Dr Thockhom Dineshore stated that Bishnupur District Hospital's successful performance of the complex procedure is a significant achievement for Government hospitals.
Lauding the team that performed the surgery, he urged all doctors at the hospital to continue working hard in service of the people.
Meanwhile, he mentioned that the hospital currently has 110 beds, with plans underway to upgrade it to a 200-bed facility.
He appealed to the Government to provide the necessary infrastructure to upgrade the hospital.
Dr Nando, who led the surgery, said that performing the total hip replacement at his hospital was challenging, as such procedures are typically carried out in hospitals with modular operation facilities.
He said that the hospital staff prepared for nearly two years, undergoing orientation and training, to perform the surgery.
Saying that a hip joint injury is extremely painful and requires painkillers for relief, Dr Nando added that the patient is currently in the recovery phase and will be discharged today.
