Imphal, June 08 2011:
In compliance with the Supreme Court's directive, the Revenue Department has been entrusted with the task of processing land allotment and relevant measures with regard to 49 worship sites of local deities (Umang Lai) and Mosques located within Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
The process (first phase) is said to be in sync with a 2009 ruling of the apex Court whereby State authorities were instructed to either allot land document, relocate or remove religious structures located at public places.
With Revenue Department as the nodal dept, land allotment or necessary initiatives are to be processed for 16 Umang Lai/Mosques within Imphal East district whereas Imphal West district has 33 similar structures/sites.
With regard to Bishnupur and Thoubal districts there is no such initiative till date.
a State Level Committee with the Chief Secretary as the chairman has already been constituted to implement the Supreme Court directive whereas at the district level respective DCs would head the panel.
