World Press Freedom Day observed in Ukhrul

World Press Freedom Day was observed for the first time in Ukhrul district on Sunday at the UDWJA Press Club, Wino Bazar, Ukhrul.
The programme was organised by the Ukhrul District Working Journalists' Association ( UDWJA) in collaboration with the Society for Indigenous Culture and Environment (SICE), Ukhrul.
Speaking on the occasion, UDWJA president Lester Makang highlighted the challenges faced by journalists in the local environment, particularly in carrying out their professional duties effectively.
He stressed the need for resilience and commitment in upholding the principles of journalism.
Senior human rights activist Hungyohung Hungyo underscored the importance of media, citing the saying "a He also urged the media persons in Ukhrul to practice fair and unbiased reporting, cautioning that any form of bias could undermine the credibility of news.

SICE chairman, Thanmi LM Shimray, in his address, acknowledged the hardships faced by local journalists and assured that the organisation remains open to extending support in every possible way.
The observance brought together journalists, social activists, and members of civil society, highlighting the importance of a free, fair, and responsible press in a democratic society.
