Imphal, April 02 2026:
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the World Meetei Council (WMC) has brought forward the issue of Kuki-Zo armed groups under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) and the continued blockade of the critical stretch along NH-2/AH-1 by them in Manipur.
WMC has sought the Prime Minister's intervention to initiate immediate and effective measures to restore peace and free movement along the National Highways and bring a just and lasting resolution to the crisis without further delay.
WMC acknowledged that the Central Government has been actively working towards resolving insurgency issues in the North East, particularly involving Meetei insurgent groups, with a stated goal of bringing such challenges to an end.
However, it interjected that the approach being followed appears to be causing unintended hardship to the civilian population, especially the Meetei community.
According to WMC, there is a growing perception among the people that armed SoO groups have been allowed "operational freedom", which has led to a sense of injustice and insecurity among the population, who feel caught in the crossfire of policies and conflict dynamics.
Highlighting another concern, WMC noted the continued blockade of about 30 km along the NH-2 by the Kuki-Zo SoO groups.
"It is difficult for the people to reconcile calls by the Centre on the State Government to restore normalcy when the armed SoO groups are beyond the control of the State.
This has only added to the frustration and sense of helplessness among the citizens", WMC added.
The Council has urged the Prime Minister to ensure that the people of Manipur are treated at par with citizens of Gujarat or in any other part of the country.
