Imphal, April 01 2026:
Six individuals reportedly violated traditional norms during the 'Ibudhou Esing Chaiba Lai Haraoba' festival in Kumbi on March 25 by entering the sacred area wearing masks and throwing money, prompting a joint meeting of cultural organisations to curb future breaches.
Representatives from Uttra Shanglen, Sana Konung, Umanglai Kanba Apunba Lup (UKAL), and KIMACS met with festival committee members and the six individuals to discuss the matter.
UKAL general secretary Mutum Maniton later addressed the press, outlining the discussions.
Maniton lamented the disruption during the "Tangkhul Nurabi" performance, saying organisations like UKAL have long safeguarded the festival's integrity.
"We appeal to the public to work together to prevent such violations of our very important traditions from happening again", he urged.
He noted that while the festival has resumed after a break due to the pandemic and civil unrest, it is unfortunate that negative behaviors seen years ago are re-emerging.
"Lai Haraoba festival is crucial for preserving the community's culture and identity, and everyone must be careful to protect it from damage", he added.
Maniton also appealed against excessive decoration and the use of social media to post negative or inappropriate content about the rituals, emphasizing that content should reflect the true theme of the festival.
UKAL and the other organizations issued a warning that they would not remain silent if these disruptive behaviors continued.
