Rah-Veer scheme: Rs 25,000 reward to good samaritans for timely help to motor accident victims

Under the "Rah-Veer" or Good Samaritan scheme, the Government of India offers Rs 25,000 to individuals who provide timely help to victims of motor vehicle accidents by transporting them to a hospital and saving their life.
Additionally, ten exceptional Rah-Veers from different parts of India are awarded a special prize of Rs 1 lakh along with a trophy and certificate, during the National Road Safety Month event every year, informed Karam Naresh, District Transport Officer, Imphal East.
The DTO shared the details about the Rah-Veer scheme while flagging off a public awareness campaign to educate the people about Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan jointly organised by the District Administration and District Transport Office, Imphal East as part of the 37th National Road Safety Month 2026 .
The campaign was flagged off by Karam Naresh and Dr Ningthoujam Johnson, Addl Deputy Commissioner, Imphal East from Deputy Commissioner's Office, Imphal East, Porompat.
Pamphlets on road safety were distributed to people along the roadside as the campaign made its way throughout various areas of Imphal East.
Helmets were also handed over to underprivileged motor vehicles drivers.
Speaking in this connection, DTO Karam Naresh shared that the campaign was launched to spread awareness among the public about compensation to victims of hit and run motor accidents scheme, cashless treatment of road accident victims and grant of award to the Good Samaritan.
Under Section 161 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1944, a victim of a hit-and-run motor accident is entitled to receive Rs 50,000 as compensation for grievous injury.
In case of death, the victim's legal representative will receive Rs 2 lakh.
Regarding cashless treatment of road accident victims, he said any person who is a victim of road accident caused by the use of a motor vehicle will be entitled to treatment cover upto Rs 1.5 lakh, subject to a maximum cap of 7 days from the date of accident at designated hospitals recognized by the Government.
With respect to the grant of award to the Good Samaritan, Karam Naresh shared that Rs 25,000 will be awarded to Rah-Veers who assist road accident victims during the "golden hour" (one hour period from the time of accident) .
