Earth Day 2025 observed with tree plantation and cleanliness drives, cyclothon, street plays

Imphal, April 22 2025:
To support environmental protection, Earth Day 2025 was celebrated at various places with the execution of numerous activities in Manipur under the theme "Our Power, Our Planet" today .
Central Forest Division
In this connection, the Central Forest Division organized a special cleanliness drive at Cheirao Ching in Langol Reserved Forest area.
The initiative was led by Vikram Nadhe, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Central Forest Division with his team.
Around 47 bags (volume about 9 Cubic Metre) of plastic waste was collected.
As part of the drive, participants engaged in litter collection, removal of non-bio-degradable waste, and awareness activities highlighting the importance of forest conservation and sustainable living.
A general appeal was also made to the public to follow the principle of sustainable eco-tourism and to stop the use of single use plastic and replace it with more eco friendly options.
Directorate of Environment and Climate Change
A 12-kilometer cyclothon was organized in celebration of Earth Day today within Imphal City by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change in association with Editors Guild Manipur (EGM), All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU), Association of Healthcare Providers India and MAAMBA.
The event began at the Western Gate of Kangla, drawing around 300 participants' including officials and citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Secretary Arun Kumar Sinha emphasized the need for initiatives like afforestation, spring water conservation, eco-tourism, and the development of eco-friendly villages, calling them essential steps in protecting the planet.
He urged everyone to unite in preserving both the valley and hills.
Dr T Brajakumar Singh, Director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change encouraged sustainable living practices and urged people to move away from fossil fuel dependency.
Promoting bicycles and electric vehicles, he noted, could play a significant role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.
Babina Group of Companies
The Babina Group of Companies, comprising Babina Hospital, Babina Diagnostics and Classic Group of Hotels, organized a tree, plantation drive and a social service camp at and around Babina Hospital, Khabeisoi today.
Tree saplings were planted within the Babina Hospital campus led by Dr Thangjam Dhabali, Chairman and Managing Director of the Babina Group of Companies.
He was joined by Dr Shyamkumar Laishram, Medical Superintendent of Babina Hospital and Khundongbam Jayanta Singh, General Manager of Babina Hospital, along with other staff and volunteers.
Simultaneously, a cleanliness drive was conducted in and around the hospital, particularly along both sides of the Imphal-Ukhrul Road adjacent to the hospital.
Separately, under the aegis of ZEO Zone I, Singjamei Chingamakha High School observed Earth Day 2025 in the presence of Head Mistress Thokchom Renu at the premises of the school today.
On the occasion, ZEO Zone I DI Mini Sinam, students and teachers of the school planted tree saplings and also tended to the trees that were planted at Pishum Chingamacha on World Environment Day last year.
MTU
Manipur Technical University also celebrated Earth Day 2025 with impactful events organized by Under Construction Club (Civil Engineering Students Club) and NSS Units I & II at the university campus.
In a significant step toward greener governance, Registrar of MTU, Ramananda Nongmeikapam (MCS), inaugurated the university's Eco-Club and launched the "Zero Single-Use Plastic Campus" initiative.
The registrar led a pledge-taking ceremony, where faculty, staff, and students vowed to eliminate single-use plastics from the campus.
Earlier in the day, over 25 students and faculty members of MTU took part in the 12 km cyclothon organized by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
SUK
Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) planted tree saplings at Lamjing Meira Ching, Nongmaijing Ching and SUK Head Office, Wangkhei to celebrate Earth Day 2025 today.
Additionally, SUK Imphal East District Committee, SUK Imphal West District Committee, SUK Thoubal District Committee, SUK Kakching District Committee, SUK Bishnupur District Committee and SUK Jiribam District Committee as well as the units of SUK at various schools, colleges and universities also carried out tree plantation drives in their jurisdiction.
DMCTE
DM College of Teacher Education (DMCTE) conducted street plays at SCM English School, Chingamakha High School, Kid's Foundation Ghari and Khurai Lamlong Higher Secondary School including DMCTE in observation of World Earth Day today.
The trainees of DMCTE presented plays based on protecting the world and held placards with relevant messages.
The street plays highlighting the importance of planting trees and the impacts of single use plastics on the environment sensitized around 2000 students.
Khongnangthaba University
Khongnangthaba University in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change organised a one-day programme titled "Observation of Earth Day 2025 and Plastic-Free Zone Awareness Programme" at the University's auditorium hall.
SFD Manipur
Students for Development (SFD) Manipur organized a state-level awareness campaign today focusing on water and electricity conservation.
The campaign was successfully conducted across seven campuses in the State.
SFD Campus Units, along with faculty members and students, conducted a poster campaign to promote awareness about energy and water conservation.
