CBTU endorses July 9 Nation-wide general strike

The Coordinating Body of Trade Unions (CBTU), Manipur has endorsed the Nationwide general strike called by 11 Central Trade Unions against the programme and policies of the BJP led Government on July 9.The resolution to endorse the strike was taken during a convention hosted by CBTU which is an apex body of different trade unions operating in Manipur viz All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC) and United Trade Union Congress (UTUC) at Irawat Bhawan today.
The convention, attended by representatives from 35 farmers' organizations, associations, and unions, discussed the proposed general strike and the situation in Manipur.
The convention also resolved to urge the Government to work out a solution to the crisis besetting Manipur, safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur, set up a Highway Protection Force and ensure a free movement along the highways.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, AITUC, Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar said that people are not satisfied with the policies and programmes implemented by the BJP-led Government, which has been in power since 2014.Accusing the Central Government of not upholding federalism and interfering with the functioning of key institutions like the RBI, CBI, and ECI, he alleged that the BJP-led Government works in the interest of big corporates by suppressing farmers and labourers.
He also claimed that the BJP-led Government has been handing over National properties to a handful of corporate houses, promoting privatization, fueling inflation, and weakening public sector undertakings (PSUs).
Meanwhile, Sotinkumar said that the demands to be raised during the July 9 general strike include levying a 4 per cent wealth tax on billionaires, increasing corporate tax, providing a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price, repealing the Draft National Policy on Agricultural Marketing and Urban Employment Guarantee Act, strengthening public distribution system, increasing the allocation of MGNREGA by 50 per cent, reviving of the Old Pension System and stopping the privatization of PSUs, among others.
