Chandel, November 19 2025:
Despite Chandel district being declared an aspirational district by the Central Government and several measures being initiated to boost development, road construction activities taken up under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) have reportedly failed to progress, with funds allegedly disbursed without any substantial work on the ground.
Speaking at a press conference in Chandel, general secretary of Anal Naga Tangpi (ANT), Ts Lamie, stated that representatives of ANT recently visited several Anal villages to assess the developmental works undertaken by both the State and Central Governments.
During the visit, four locations marked by the authorities for PMGSY road construction were found with no work undertaken, raising concern about the utilization of Government funds.
Lamie highlighted that although the Chief Engineer of the Rural Engineering Department had earlier assured timely completion of the projects, the 15 km Lambung-Phiral Khullen road under the scheme has been reported as completed on paper, despite no significant work being carried out.
Documents submitted to the Chief Engineer claimed full completion of the stretch, he added.
He further revealed that the Chakpikarong-Chalong Lamkhai road for Phase I and Phase II remains incomplete, with only Water Bound Macadam (WBM) laid.
Out of the intended blacktopping, merely 400 metres has been completed.
Similarly, the road connecting Sugnu Tribal to Thongsi village has also been left at the WBM stage, showing no further progress.
Lamied added that ANT had repeatedly informed the Chief Engineer about the condition of the roads and the slow pace of work.
However, no concrete action has been taken so far.
He appealed to the State Government to intervene urgently and ensure that the construction works are expedited for timely completion.
Such alleged discrepancies, he said, not only hinder development but also cause significant hardship to the local communities who depend on these roads for daily connectivity.
