Ukhrul, November 03 2025:
The Sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (SABS) joyfully marked the 60th anniversary of their mission in Hungpung, Ukhrul, with a solemn thanksgiving ceremony, celebrating six decades of faith, service, and community building.
Founded in 1965, Hungpung was the first SABS foundation in Northeast India and the congregation's first mission outside Kerala since its establishment in 1908.The historic celebration was graced by Most Rev Linus Neli, Archbishop of Imphal; Most Rev Dominic Lumon, Archbishop Emeritus of Imphal; and Rev Mother Joyce Thekkumkattil SABS, Provincial Superior of Corpus Christi Province, Dimapur.
Also present were 44-AC MLA Ramnganing Muivah, local leaders, priests, religious, and well-wishers.
The gathering honoured six decades of SABS contributions to education, pastoral ministry, and social outreach in Manipur.
Archbishop Linus Neli, in his address, traced the roots of the Catholic Church in the state.
"When missionaries sought permission from the Meitei Maharaja, they were told they could go to die hills - and thus, the first official Catholic mission was founded in Hundung, now Hungpung, in 1952," becoming the first Catholic community in Manipur.
Reflecting SABS Sisters' six-decade journey of faith and service, the Archbishop noted that their presence strengthened the Church's mission.
"The SABS Sisters have been pillars of faith and compassion - big sisters to our clergy and partners in mission," he said.
He commended their openness to local vocations, urging them to "keep the charism always attractive and young".
Archbishop Emeritus Dominic Lumon, MLA Ram Muivah, local leaders Mawon Chahong of the Parish Pastoral Council and Isaiah Phachang, chairman of the Sacred Heart Church Committee, also conveyed heartfelt gratitude to the Sisters for their lasting contribution to faith, education, and community development.
The celebration concluded with cultural performances by students, youth, and women's groups - a vibrant expression of joy and thanksgiving for six decades of missionary love and service in the hills of Manipur.
