Sustainable fish farming vital for livelihood security around Loktak Lake: MLA Robindro

Thanga MLA T Robindro Singh has stressed the importance of sustainable fish farming in ensuring livelihood security and economic development for communities dependent on Loktak Lake.
He was speaking at a one-day stakeholders' workshop on "Sustainable Livelihoods and Fish Farming in the vicinity of Loktak Lake" held at Thanga on Saturday.
The programme was supported under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) of the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) and jointly organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre.

Welcoming the participants, Dr S B Singh, Head of Regional Centre, ICAR Manipur Centre, highlighted the importance of scientific interventions and community participation in promoting sustainable fisheries development around Loktak Lake.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr S Khogen Singh, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Ukhrul, emphasised the role of scientific fish farming in improving the livelihood and nutritional security of rural communities.
Dr Poonam J Singh, Nodal Officer, SCSP, ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow, stated that the programme was aimed at supporting Scheduled Caste communities through fisheries- based livelihood interventions.
She highlighted the efforts of ICAR-NBFGR in providing scientific support, improved technologies and essential inputs to enhance income-generation opportunities among fish farmers.
Speaking as the chief guest MLA T Robindro Singh stated that Loktak Lake continues to remain a vital source of livelihood for thousands of families and called for greater collaboration among research institutions, Government agencies and local communities to promote sustainable fisheries development He urged fish farmers to adopt scientific practices and effectively utilise the support and training provided by research institutions.
During the programme, fishery inputs were distributed to 160 beneficiaries.
The distributed items included 276 fish feed packets, 600 kg of fish fingerlings comprising Grass Carp, Amur Common Carp and Jayanti Rohu, 600 fish drying devices (Kharai), 12 cage nets and 10 flood lights.
Beneficiaries also shared their experiences and interacted with scientists on issues related to fish farming and livelihood improvement.
