Imphal, June 16 2025:
A one-day consultative outreach programme on "Marginalised Scheduled Caste Communities in Thanga Village" was held today at Thanga Karang organised by the Centre for Study of Social Inclusion (CSSI), Manipur University in collaboration with Karang Island Development Organisation (KIDO).
It was attended by CSSI Manipur University, Associate Professor Dr Thiyam Bharat as chief guest, KIDO president, Salam Kheda as functional president and Karang ward number 3, Thanga Pt 1 Gram Panchayat member, Haobijam Gourahari as guest of honour.
Speaking at the event, Dr Thiyam Bharat stated that such an outreach program was organised to identify the core issues that are being faced by the SC community of Karang.
He said that among the Scheduled Caste communities in the State, Karang can be assumed as one of the most backward SC communities, lacking all the basic infrastructures.
He therefore raised the need for taking up special programmes for the communities.
Speaking as the resource person of the programme, KIDO secretary Soibam Kanta stated that the villagers of Karang mostly engaged in fishing as their profession.
Before the arrival of Loktak Project, farming was possible in the area, however since the arrival of the project, the water level has significantly increased in the area hampering their agricultural activities and therefore they have to rely on fishing as their source of livelihood, said Kanta.
Stating that the village lacks all infrastructures in terms of education, health care facilities, transportation, and other basic facilities, he urged the authorities concerned to look into the matter and take up immediate measures to alleviate the living condition of the villagers.
