Moirang Keithel reopens briefly amid continued protests and curfew restrictions

Moirang, April 16 2026:
Following the inhumane bomb attack that killed two children and injured their mother at Tronglaobi, and the killing of three civilians during protests in alleged indiscriminate firing by personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Moirang Keithel, which had remained shut since April 7, partially reopened on Thursday, allowing business activities to continue till 11 am.
The shutdown of the market was part of a protest demanding stringent punishment for those involved in the incidents.
The agitation began on April 7, the day of the incident, and continued for nine days, during which Moirang Keithel remained closed and roads were blocked as a mark of protest.
According to an announcement made by the Moirang Joint Committee - an apex body formed by KEMKAL.
AMAC, MAMPIL and ANUL - the decision to allow temporary reopening of the market was taken in view of the hardships faced by the general public.
The committee stated that prolonged closure had severely affected daily wage earners and families dependent on day-to-day livelihood activities.
However, the district administration did not officially relax curfew restrictions.
In an order issued by the District Magistrate, it was stated that due to the prevailing law and order situation, curfew would remain in force in the district on April 15 and 16.Despite this, from early morning hours, people came out in large numbers at Moirang Keithel and resumed business activities.
Shops and other commercial establishments remained open till 11 am, while inter-district and inter-village passenger transport services were also seen operating during this period.
Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing protest, a total shutdown was observed in Bishnupur district.
Bishnupur Keithel remained deserted, and protesters staged road blockades at key locations, including Bishnupur Forest Gate, intensifying their demand for justice in connection with the incidents.
