Kangpokpi to enforce SUP ban from May 25

Kangpokpi, May 13 2025:
In a decisive move to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable living, Kangpokpi district administration has issued a stringent order imposing a complete ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs), in line with the Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022 and the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.The order, issued by deputy commissioner Mahesh Chaud-hari, underscores the district's commitment to the state-wide ban that came into effect on April 15, 2025 .
Despite the ban already being in place, instances of continued usage and distribution of SUPs by individuals, vendors, shopkeepers, and distributors have been reported across the district.
Effective from May 25, 2025, anyone found manufacturing, importing, stocking, distributing, selling, or using banned SUP items will face strict legal action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Section 10 of the Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022.The ban includes plastic carry bags (virgin or recycled) with a thickness of less than 120 microns, and PET/ PETE bottles with a capacity of less than one litre intended for drinking water.
It also includes non-woven plastic carry bags with a thickness below 60 GSM, as well as all polystyrene and expanded polystyrene products.
Specific items under this category comprise ear buds with plastic sticks, balloon sticks, plastic flags, candy and ice cream sticks, and various forms of plastic cutlery such as spoons, forks, knives, straws, and stirrers.
Additionally, trays and plastic wrapping films used for sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets are banned, along with PVC or plastic banners having a thickness of less than 100 microns.
The deputy commissioner has directed all relevant departments to ensure strict enforcement of the regulations.
Authorities have been directed to take prompt action against any violations to promote responsible waste management practices.
This order signals a clear message: Kangpokpi is committed to protecting its environment and future generations by eliminating harmful plastic waste once and for all.
