Imphal, September 11 2025:
The Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur (CRAM) has appealed to the Government of Manipur and the Government of India to refrain from any forced eviction of the villagers of Leimakhongmapal village in Imphal East district.
Expressing deep concern over the proposed land acquisition and eviction plan at Leimakhongmapal village for the expansion of Imphal-Ukhrul road, CRAM has asserted that Leimakhongmapal is a historic and ancestral village of the Meitei villagers.
A press release issued by CRAM said that more than 30 homes belonging to more than 200 Meitei people will be affected and there is no resettlement plan for the villagers to be affected by the road expansion.
The forced eviction will displace and cause homelessness and undermine the basic fundamental rights of affected villagers, specially women, children and elderly, it said.
The Government should take consent of the affected villagers and also arrange an alternative resettlement plan with their rightful involvement and consultation, CRAM said.
The land rights of the affected Meitei people over their ancestral land in Leimakhongmapal village should be recognized.
Any development process including construction and expansion of road should desist from harming indigenous communities in Manipur, it asserted.
