MU protests against UGs extortion demand to a teacher

Imphal, March 31, 2011: Students and teachers of the Computer Science Department of Manipur University today staged a sit-in protest against threat to their head of department, Oinam Ibomcha of LangthabalKunja Awang Leikai.

Ibomcha received threats a demand letter from the Ministry of Chaplee (finance), Government of the People's Republic of Nagaland, signed by its commander Jack Kamei, dated March 11, 2011 on March 12 and has been under threats since then.

Some unknown persons handed over the demand letter of Rs three lakh with a bullet to the family of the teacher on March 12 last.

Failure on the part of the teacher to fulfill their demand, they again handed over a note of the same group on March 22.After around a week later, a hand grenade was also placed at the residence of Ibomcha on the night of March 28 last.

The repeated threats received by the teacher has disturbed the academic atmosphere of the University, said the students and professors of the MU who staged a sit-in protest in front inside the MU campus.

A student taking part in the protest said that the repeated threat posed to their teacher had affected to academic atmosphere.

Considering the career of the students, UGs should not served money from the teachers and avoid threatening to them, he demanded.

They staged the protest cancelling their classes for the day and urged for not to harass the teachers, to make education a free zone, don't disturb academic atmosphere of the University.

The protest that started around 10 am went on till 3 pm.

Another sit-in protest on the same matter was also staged at the locality of the teacher at Langthabal Kunja Awang Leikai, in which around 100 women and members of local club participated.

They urged the concerned UG group to withdraw the demand and to stop threatening the teacher.

Meanwhile, residence of the Kwakeithel in Imphal West district also staged a sit-in protest against bomb attack at the house of a school headmaster last night that inflicted injuries to the headmaster.

Womenfolk taking part in the protest said that no underground had served monetary demand to her husband and except teaching children in the government school he is posting, her husband engaged in no other activities which would hurt the interest of the UGs.
