Imphal, August 27 2025:
Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) has successfully treated a rare case of gallbladder torsion in an 18-year-old girl.
According to a press release, this condition has been documented only about 500 times worldwide in international literature since gallbladder surgery first started.
The patient was admitted with severe upper abdominal pain that worsened after meals.
The initial ultrasound showed a distended gallbladder with a thickened wall of 10mm, suggesting inflammation.
No gallstones were detected, making it a rare condition.
She was advised to get immediate surgery but chose to return home for a family consultation.
The following day, she returned with worsening pain, which led to urgent surgical intervention.
A diagnostic laparoscopy performed by Dr Sinkhol Laishram, Consultant General Surgeon, Shija Hospitals, revealed that the gallbladder had twisted on its supporting structures, cutting off the blood supply.
The gallbladder had become unusually large (about 15 cm long and 10 cm wide) and had turned completely gangrenous with a fluid collection around it, indicating that blood circulation was severely compromised.
Fortunately, it had not adhered to the nearby organs, which made the surgery safer.
If left untreated, the condition can lead to necrosis, perforation, peritonitis or potentially a life- threatening infection, said the press release.
The gallbladder was removed through a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.
The patient recovered well and was able to resume a normal diet the following day.
She was discharged in good condition on the 2nd postoperative day.
