Two frauds sent to jail

Two individuals who collected Rs 48 lakh from some people with the false promise of giving them 'secured jobs and regular salary' have been sent to jail.
The accused persons identified as Salam Nabachandra (55) s/o (L) Tomba of Keibul Awang Leikai at present staying at New Checkon Mandop Leikai and Oinam Surmandir (44) s/o Rajen of Ngakchroupokpi were produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West today following completion of police custody period.
While Salam Nabachandra claimed to be the director of Manipur Institute of Open Schooling, Oinam Surmandir said he was the superintendent.
An APP of the State submitted that on April 27 some of the victims lodged a complaint before Singjamei police station stating that in the last part of 2022, they (victims) were approached by three persons who identified themselves as Director, Secretary and Superintendent of Manipur Institute of Open Schooling (Autonomous) with an offer for jobs at the institute on regular basis in the capacity of the Supervisor and Junior Assistant.
The accused persons claimed that their institute was funded by the Government of India and approved by the Government of Manipur.
When the victims expressed interest in the job offer, they were told by the accused persons that they had to make security deposits.
The victims together gave a sum of Rs 48 lakh to the accused persons; at the rate of Rs 18 lakh for the post of supervisor and Rs 12 lakh for the post of junior assistant.
After this, some purported appointment orders were given to the victims and they were asked to report to the institute located at Kakwa Laiphrakpam Leikai, Pukhri Achouba Maning.
They were promised a monthly salary of Rs 44,900 for the post of supervisor and Rs 19,900 for the post of junior assistant.
The victims used to go regularly to the institute but they were simply asked to sit in the office without assigning any work.
On completion of a month, they were not given any salary.
It was only then the victims realized that they had been cheated.
During the course of investigation, the accused persons were arrested and during interrogation, Salam Nabachandra disclosed that he joined the institute in 2001 when it had its office at Sanjenthong Guest House 1st floor and promoted to director by an order issued by one M Lhouvum, secretary of the institute in 2021 .
The institute shifted its office to Ghari Awang Leikai in 2022, Oinam Surmandir, superintendent and M Lhouvum secretary collected a huge amount of money from three victims but he did not have any idea about it until a complaint was filed with police.
The Court, on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of the APP, remanded Oinam Surmandir and Salam Nabachandra in judicial custody till June 9 for smooth investigation of the case.
