Imphal, December 24 2025:
A State Level Media Sensitization Workshop on "Pre-Conception (PC) and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT)" was successfully conducted today at the conference hall of the Directorate of Family Welfare Services, Manipur in Imphal.
It was organised by the PC & PNDT Cell in collaboration with the Directorate of Family Welfare Services, Government of Manipur and State Health Society, National Health Mission.
The workshop was attended by Family Welfare Services, Director, Dr N Bino; Additional Director, Dr Somojit Ningombam; Joint Director, Dr Sonia Irengbam; and PC & PNDT, State Nodal Officer, Dr Sujata Huidrom among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr N Bino said that the workshop was conducted to educate media professionals about the PreConception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&PNDT) Act, 1994, its key provisions, and their role in preventing gender-biased sex selection and promoting gender equality.
Dr Bino asserted that despite the ban on prenatal sex determination, the practice continues to be widespread due to lack of awareness and deeply rooted cultural attitudes such as strong preferences for sons.
"Addressing this complex issue requires a holistic approach that includes strengthening enforcement, raising public awareness, empowering women economically and educationally, and challenging the underlying social and cultural biases that devalue the girl child", added the Director.
Stating that the media plays a crucial role in supporting the PC&PNDT Act, Dr Bino called for responsible and sensitive reporting on issues related to female foeticide, the importance of the girl child, and gender equality.
Dr Bino further emphasized that media coverage can significantly help reinforce the Act's objective of preventing sex-selective abortion and promoting the value of daughters in the society.
"Responsible reporting can contribute to a positive shift in societal attitudes and behaviors regarding gender equality", added Dr Bino.
The workshop witnessed active participation from about 20 journalists from different media houses in the State.
