Imphal, April 21 2025:
Manipuri Chanura Leishem Marup (Macha Leima) observed its 56th foundation day at Lamyanba Shanglen located at Konung Lampak today.
The event was graced by senior broadcaster Chongtham Kamala as the chief guest and W Amusana, president, Macha Leima as the functional president.
Delivering the keynote address, Khangembam Chanu Lanchenbi, treasurer, Macha Leima, said that the association was formed by girl students on April 21, 1969 .
Establishing the organisation at that time was not an easy task in a world where men held all the power.
Though women were regarded as mothers, sisters and wives, society refused to grant them permission to carry out their works freely.
Even after marriage, women lived under their in-laws and husbands as a rule.
The condition of women in Manipuri society was disheartening, she said.
It has been Macha Leima's objective to break the bounds of tradition which keep women under subjugation and help them stand independently shoulder to shoulder with the rest of society.
To meet this goal, Macha Leima has worked consistently in remote locations in the State and outside Manipur, including Cachar, in collaboration with its branches, maintained Khangembam Chanu Lanchenbi.
In 1972, Macha Leima started releasing a triannual journal focusing on women related issues.
Then, on June 1 of the same year, Macha Leima School was established.
In honour of the brave mothers of Nupi Lan, Macha Leima began observing "Nupigi Numit" from December 12, 1973 .
On November 1, 1997, Macha Chamma micro finance scheme was launched to improve the financial condition of women.
Additionally, the organisation has established an RTI Cell and started observing Khongjom Day from 1970 in collaboration with PWO.
Later, the Government started the State level celebration of the day.
She urged womenfolk to unite and help take the State forward.
