Owing to Manipur's favourable climatic condition for sunflower farming, Prof Th Robindro, Deputy Director of CAU, Directorate of Extension Education, has encouraged farmers of the State to cultivate sunflower post-harvest of paddy.
Prof Th Robindro encouraged this during a field visit at Wangoo Laipham Awang Leikol Samtak Loukol, where he along with officials of CAU, Directorate of Extension Education inspected sunflower farms, run by the farmers of Loumi Sinmi Apun Lup (LOUSAL).
Prof Th Robindro stated that due to global climate change, there is a need to cultivate climate resilient crops that are suitable in the State for high yield and sustainability.
In this regard, CAU in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research, Hyderabad under Expansion of Oilseed in Manipur have taken up Sunflower plantation projects in the State, said Robindro.
"Sunflower cultivation started two year ago on a trial basis in Manipur has seen success.
This year, sunflowers were planted at 20 Paris of land, and are ready to harvest", said Robindro.
Stating that the sunflower yields during the trials have been high, he urged the farmers to start cultivating it at the fields post paddy harvest since there is a high demand for sunflower oil in the country, he added.
Robindro was also accompanied by Prof Ph Ranjit, Director of CAU, Directorate of Extension Education and LOUSAL president, L Kiran.
