Best practices for successful rehabilitation stressed

A capacity building programme of drug rehabilitation centres to address rights, HIV and Hepatitis was launched at RIMS' Psychiatry Departmenttoday.
The event, jointly organised by MAMTA-HIMC (Health Institute for Mother and Child), Social Welfare Department and CADAP (Community Allegiance for Drug use and Appropriate Practices), saw the release of a training module.
JNIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Kh Lokeshwar; Sr Public Health Specialist, DHS Lamphel, Dr Rajkumari Rosie; Sr Regional Manager, MAMTA HIMC, Sumit Basu; Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE) president RK Nalinikanta; and Deputy Director (Children Programme), Directorate of Social Welfare, Manipur, Saroja Konsam among others attended the event At the event, CADAP president Takhellambam Rajivkumar Singh stressed the importance of upholding the rights of drug users to rehabilitate them.
Compulsory detention and rehabilitation or forcibly keeping drug users at rehabilitation centres have negative impacts on their well-being.
Treating them as criminals undermines the process of rehabilitation and it also affects them psychologically and risks developing suicidal tendency, he said.
The capacity building project will see many programmes across rehabilitation centres involving experts to adopt best practices.
Treating drug users, patients with respect and dignity could influence them positively and change their behaviour, he added.
