ZUF pays tribute to Rani Gaidinliu

Imphal, January 25 2026: The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) on Sunday paid tribute to legendary fighter Rani Gaidinliu on her birthday, which coincides with India's Republic Day, recalling her contribution to the freedom struggle and the historical role of the Zeliangrong people.

In a statement, Louis Gangmei, Secretary, Information & Publicity of the ZUF, said the birth of India as a sovereign republic on January 26 is a testament to the sacrifices of countless patriots and visionaries, among whom Rani Gaidinliu occupies a distinguished place.

Born on January 26, 1915, Rani Gaidinliu later emerged as one of India's prominent women freedom fighters.

The organisation noted that the observance of Rani Gaidinliu's 111th birth anniversary alongside Republic Day holds special significance, as her struggle represented the aspirations of people from the then remote Northeastern region.

It stated that the history of India's freedom movement would remain incomplete without acknowledging the sacrifices and resistance led by Rani Gaidinliu and her contemporaries.

Recalling the broader historical context, the statement highlighted that the struggle of the Zeliangrong people against colonial oppression under the leadership of Haipou Jadonang coincided with major milestones in India's national movement, including the passage of the Purna Swaraj resolution by the Indian National Congress in 1929 and its proclamation in 1930.It also referred to the adoption of Satyameva Jayate as India's national motto on January 26, 1950 .

The ZUF further drew parallels with slogans used during the Zeliangrong resistance movement, noting that Hozam, meaning "triumph" or "victory", became a rallying call during the period from 1929 to 1931, and continues to be used today alongside Ringtelou, meaning "Long Live" or "Jai" .

The ZUF urged the Government of India to sincerely address long-pending Zeliangrong political issues and expedite a concrete settlement currently under negotiation.

Extending greetings on the 77th Republic Day, the organisation paid homage to Rani Gaidinliu, reaffirming her enduring legacy in India's freedom struggle.
