Festival of Art and Cultural Expressions kicks off

The Festival of Art and Cultural Expressions (Series 1-Theatre) organised by the Department of Art & Culture was kicked off today at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound.
The festival is set to conclude on May 28.Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Sabitri Heisnam was present as the chief guest and M Joy Singh, Special Commissioner (Art & Culture) as the functional president at the event which also featured beneficiaries under the Chief Ministergi Artistes Singgi Tengbang for 2023-2024 .
Addressing the gathering, Padma Shri Sabitri Heisnam highlighted the hardships faced by theatre artistes in trying to keep their respective theatres running or in working for the upliftment of the theatre community.
She urged budding artistes to remain dedicated to their craft and also called for an increase in the monetary assistance provided under CMAT.
Terming theatre as a composite art form, M Joy Singh said that it integrates dancing, singing, acting, Thang-Ta and religious components.
He expressed hope that the festival will bring harmony and peace among different communities by depicting the same in the plays.
41 plays will be showcased during the festival across various theatre halls.
At the inaugural event, Manipur State Kala Akademi Awardee Dr S Thanileima's "Chumthang Makhong" was showcased by artistes of Khenjonglang Theatre.
