A 66-year old female patient successfully underwent a non-operative procedure to close a hole in the heart at Sky Hospital on September 9.The "device closure of a heart hole" was performed on Arambam Nungshi from Thoubal who had the defect (known as Atrial Septal Defect/ASD) since birth.
The heart hole measured 35.1 mm in diameter, said a press release issued by E Naresh, Sky Hospital & Research Centre.
On September 9, the size and precise location of the ASD were confirmed with Trans-Esophageal Echo (TEE).
She underwent the non-operative closure of the heart defect with the use of a large 40 mm diameter ASD device on the same day.
Although the patient had multiple medical problems in her old age, the device was successfully implanted across the defect, closing it completely.
Nungshi started eating and drinking two hours after the procedure was completed, mobilised the next day and was discharged two days after the device implant procedure.
Expressing joy at the success of her medical procedure without opening up her heart and chest, she said that there is no longer any need to go outside Manipur for such treatment at high cost and travel inconveniences.
