Imphal, April 05 2026:
The Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) organised its first State Level Open Debate Competition today at the auditorium of the JN Manipur Dance Academy, sparking lively discussion on whether Meetei women marrying outsiders harms the Meetei community.
Presided over by retired Professor of Manipur University's Anthropology Department, W Nabakumar, the event drew 51 participants arguing for and against the motion: "Meetei nupina mitopta mayum panbana Meetei phurupta maangjaba leite" (Meetei women marrying outsiders does not harm the Meetei community).
The jury comprised Dr Naorem Sanatomba, Assistant Professor, Manipuri Department, MU; Dr Pangeijam Sanjeev, Head, Department of English, Imphal College; and social activist Leishangthem Lamyanba.
Speaking at the event, KKL secretary general Ngamkheingakpa Luwang announced the debate as a lead-up to the organisation's 8th Foundation Day on April 8.He highlighted declining Meitei fertility rates- 1.7 according to State Government data - as a major threat, noting UNESCO figures warn that rates below 1.8 heighten extinction risks for communities.
He also asserted that the competition aimed to provide academic knowledge and raise awareness among students and youth about the need to protect the community.
Notably, the top three winners will receive cash prizes along with memento and certificate.
Consolation prizes will also be awarded to ten individuals.
