Chandel, May 16 2026:
A one-day awareness programme on forest fire prevention, along with the distribution of certificates to 350 trainees who completed training in six eco-tourism related trades, was held yesterday at Lambung Hall in Chandel district.
As part of the programme, a felicitation ceremony was also organised for the winners of the spot-painting competition conducted in connection with the upcoming observance of the International Day of Biodiversity.
Around 50 tree saplings were also planted prior to the programme.
The event was attended by Divisional Forest Officer, Chandel, Dr N Munal Meitei as chief guest; L Nohah, Chief of Lambung village as functional president, and Range Forest Officer (RFO), Chandel, N Deepa as guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Dr N Munal Meitei stated that continuous deforestation and frequent forest fires have adversely affected the rainfall pattern in the State.
He said rising temperatures, large-scale deforestation and poppy cultivation have made forest fires a major challenge in Manipur.
He further pointed out that jhum cultivation, careless disposal of cigarette butts and increasing picnic and party activities in forest areas are among the causes of forest fires in the State.
He informed that nearly 80 percent of the total forest area in Manipur is vulnerable to forest fires.
Urging the public to take collective responsibility, Dr Munal appealed to members of Van Dhan Vikas Kendras, Self Help Groups and village authorities to work together to prevent forest fires, which he termed as the "greatest enemy of forests".
Speaking on the occasion, Range Forest Officer N Deepa stressed that protecting forests, which are valuable national assets, is the responsibility of every citizen.
Referring to Article 51A(g) of the Indian Constitution, she said all citizens are dutybound to protect and improve the natural environment.
She also called upon the people to join hands in preserving the environment and making Chandel a greener and more beautiful district.
