Imphal, April 03 2025:
The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an urgent appeal to offer humanitarian relief and strategic outreach to Myanmar as a follow-up to the tragic earthquake that occurred on March 28 .
As per a press release issued by Dr Atom Sunil Singh, Director.
AIMS, the memo was also additionally submitted to other influential Union Ministers and Chief Ministers of North-Eastern states and advocates for a multi-dimensional course of action towards addressing the present crisis.
Considering the magnitude of the disaster brought on by the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake followed by a powerful 6.4 magnitude aftershock and Myanmar's pre-existing vulnerabilities through continuing civil strife, the memorandum has demanded urgent international unity and action.
Important points of the memorandum include
i) immediate deployment of equipment such as Proclain JCBs and cranes which is important for rescue efforts and removal of debris
ii) temporary and regulated opening of the India-Myanmar Border at Moreh for easing speedy and effective delivery of goods and resources
iii) urgent supply of commodities such as masks, safe water for drinking, medical supplies and sending Indian medical teams for supporting emergency medical care services to affected areas
iv) as a measure of sustainable rehabilitation, the memorandum proposes the use of solar microgrids and generators to rebuild electricity in devastated areas
v) intensive diplomatic action is proposed to push for ceasefires both in Myanmar and in the ethnic battles between Meitei and Kuki to facilitate unhindered delivery of aid and security for all parties.
The memorandum further emphasised the necessity of Seismic Microzonation in North East India to better prepare and reduce the impact of possible future earthquakes in this at-risk area.
This project seeks to create specific building codes and construction methods to improve resilience.
