Imphal, February 14, 2013:
Decrying alleged indifferent attitude by the State authorities to repeated appeals for repairing/maintenance of the Lamphelpat Sanakeithel road, people of the area today took out a protest rally, which culminated with a delegation handing over a memorandum to the Chief Minister.
The protest rally, with the participants holding banners and placards denouncing Government inaction to repair the road stretch, kick-started from Lamphel Sanakeithel Panthoibi shanglen at around 9 am and proceeded upto the lamphel traffic island near RIMS Hospital.
Even though the protest rally was stopped by the police at the traffic point, five JAC representatives were allowed to proceed for submitting the memorandum.
The representation addressed to the CM highlighted that Lamphel Sanakeithel (urban by-pass) road serving as the link road to the capital project, RIMS, Imphal West DC office, Uripok, Langol Housing Complex and other important institutions has been lying in a highly dilapidated condition for about 10 years thereby causing untold miseries to daily commuters, including legislators, top bureaucrats.
Further pointed out that the common citizens have to endure severe inconveniences in reaching RIMS Hospital whenever there is emergency situation, the JAC also conveyed strong resentment that inspite of several requests to the authorities concerned through the local MLA and media in addition to staging protest demonstrations no positive action has been initiated by the Government till date.
The fact that many section of the Sanakeithel Road remain water-logged during the monsoons and dusty during dry season is even more cause for serious concern as locations of educational institutions in Lamphelpat areas mean that the young students are exposed to great risk on a daily basis, mentioned the memorandum.
It further appealed to the Chief Minister for firm and necessary directive to the department concerned for redressing suffering of the people at the earliest.
When approached a protestor citing inaction inspite of repeated reminders questioned if there is any hidden agenda of the Government of Manipur against the people of Lamphel.
Observing that condition of the Sanakeithel Road might be the worst in Imphal area, if not the entire State, the protestor suggested that the Government do the needful before the people resort to extreme measures to draw attention of the Govt.
