Income Tax department holds seminar for DDOs

As a part of the four-day awareness campaign launched by the Income Tax department for DDOs of the State, a seminar on Duties and Responsibilities of DDOs under the Income Tax Act, 1961 was held today at the Conference Hall of Directorate of Education (U&HE) for Drawing and Disbursement Officers (DDOs) of different Govt Colleges and higher educational institutions.
Delivering the keynote address, C Deepak Singh, Joint Commissioner of IT (TDS), NER, Guwahati said that the tax deduction at source (TDS) collection from the State witnessed a growth of more than 40 percent during FY 2012-13 making the State the fastest growing State in the NE region and one of the fastest growing States in India while applauding the role of DDOs in collecting revenue through TDS.
He also called upon all DDOs to be aware of their legal obligations and responsibilities as prescribed in the IT Act so that they can effectively and efficiently contribute to nation building.
Deepak also underlined the paramount role of the IT dept in the collection of revenue by informing that about 60 percent of the taxes of the Govt of India is collected by the dept.
Saying that taxes are the cost of civilisation, he stated that the IT dept has been a proud partner in the nation building process through progressive tax policy, efficient and effective tax administration and improved voluntary compliance.
Amitava Sanyal, ITO, Guwahati; Sumit Purkayashta, ITO (Tech) Guwahati and S Sachidananda Singh, Inspector of IT were the resource persons of the technical session.
The seminar was jointly organised by Commissioner of IT (TDA), NE Region, Giwahati and Directorate of Education (University & Hr Education), Govt of Manipur, according to a statement issued by Ng Joseph Gangte, Dy Commissioner IT (TDS), Imphal.
