Imphal, October 28 2025:
The 9th death anniversary of Thounaojam Iboyaima, fondly called the "Father of Social Work", was observed at the Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU) Hall at Yaiskul Police Lane today.
As a part of the observance, a public convention on Manipur's integrity, focused on building an equal society, was held.
The event, organised by Iboyaima Memorial Trust, was attended by the trust's convenor and president of Irabot Foundation Manipur Kh Gopen Luwang, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur president Soraisam Memcha, Committee on Human Rights chairman Phunindro Konsam, AMUCO president Sorokhaibam Sanjoy, AMWOVA president Yumkhaibam Kunjarani and representatives of many other civil society organisations.
The gathering paid floral tributes and observed a 2-minute silence as a mark of respect for the departed.
Speaking on the occasion, Kh Gopen said Manipur's integrity is not only about its territorial boundary...It stands for the dignity and integrity of the people and the coexistence of the communities within.
He said the State and her people should strive to become self-reliant.
Gopen further spoke about the conflict that erupted on May 3, 2023 and said that the State's own people are unable to travel on Highways freely and safely.
While there is no free movement of people on the Highways, farmers in the fringes of the valley are unable to cultivate their own land, he said.
The challenges facing Manipur today aren't a sign of a just and equal society.
The Government or the President's Rule administration must act with accountability to protect and safeguard the people and the State's integrity.
For the State to become self-reliant, farmers must be able to cultivate their land safely and freely, Gopen said.
During the height of the conflict, he said, farmers were attacked.
injured and even killed.
Even today, farmers are still unable to till their land in the foothills.
The State can't become self-reliant when its farmers aren't allowed to till the land and cultivate in the fringes of the valley.
The Government must therefore take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the farmers, Gopen said.
Any untoward incidents affecting farmers this season may cause the public to erupt in anger, he cautioned.
