Awareness programme on PC-PNDT and violence against women held

Ukhrul, July 25 2025:
District Health Society, Ukhrul and One Stop Centre (OSC) on Friday organised a one-day awareness programme on "Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostics Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Determination) Including Elimination of Violence Against Women" for the benefit of the collegians of Pettigrew College, Ukhrul.
On the occasion, Dr Pamza Luikham, District Nodal Officer (DNO), PCPNDT Ukhrul said that the need and the role of the PC-PNDT programme is to improve the sex ratio by educating the masses.
Section 22 of PC-PNDT Act, 1994 & 2023 clearly forbids any advertisement related to sex determination, she said.
The DNO further highlighted the need for collaborative effort in ensuring programmes with other departments that are providing various benefits or incentives supporting girl child.
Meanwhile, Chonchuirin Luithui, District Coordinator, OSC, Ukhrul stressed on ways to end gender based violence in society.
In order to achieve this, women need to break gender stereotypes, focus on women empowerment and education and participation of women in societal decision making.
Luithui also highlighted some of the activities and functions of One Stop Centre including safeguarding women's rights and stopping violence against women.
OSC provides servic es to all vulnerable women in need by providing shelter, legal counselling etc.
According to her, 129 cases were registered in Ukhrul OSC related to gender violence, of which 61% were domestic violence cases.
As a part of the campaign programme, a bookmark of OSC containing the contact numbers of the staff were distributed to all for any emergency.
More than 100 people, including lecturers, students and the staff of the Medical Department and OSC, attended the awareness programme held at Pettigrew College Hall, Meizailung Ukhrul.
