Elucidating concept of income tax, he said income tax is divided into direct tax and indirect tax, though it is mainly considered as direct tax.
"Everyday purchases like a pencil and a chocolate are already taxed indirectly, while business incomes or salaries are taxed as income tax," he explained.
The deputy commissioner stated that salaried employees have to file their income tax by July 31 every year.
However, the Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the date of filing till September 15.Urging all concerned to pay their income tax, he said that in case of failing to do so, a revise return file or belated filing could be done.
If nothing is filed even at the time of belated filing, the person or company could be face legal consequences, Haridas cautioned.
He noted that for a small state like Manipur, awareness on income tax is extremely important, as most do not want to pay the taxes unaware of the fact that education, healthcare and other infrastructure along with government schemes rely on the revenue from direct and indirect taxes.
He asserted that tax revenue forms the backbone of administration, essential for the effective functioning of any government, with maximum revenue for India coming from direct and indirect taxes.
"The tax we pay are ultimately returned to us at the end," pointed out the deputy commissioner, adding that this is also a form of public service.
Regarding filing returns, he said it is mandatory, and urged all to file their returns, explaining that even STs are not exempted from filing their returns.
"If the returns are not filed, the income generated by a business would be regarded as unaccounted money," he cautioned.
