Imphal, April 24 2026:
A two-day convention of Manipuri Students' Unions and Associations from Northeast India was successfully held on April 23 and 24, 2026 at Leimarembi Induprabha Memorial Complex, South Barak, Binakandi, Lakhipur in Assam.
The convention was jointly organised by the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), All Assam Manipuri Students' Union (AAMSU), Shillong Manipuri Students' Union (SMSU), and Agartala Tripura Manipuri Students' Association (ATMSA), and was hosted by AAMSU.
Around 100 student representatives from Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura participated in the event, according to a joint statement issued by the student bodies.
The inaugural session on the first day was jointly chaired by AMSU president Lukram Malangba, SMSU president Priyalini Rajkumari, and AAMSU president Kangabam Subhojit, while Surjit S Thokchom, advisor of the Meghalaya Manipuri Forum (MMF), moderated the proceedings.
During the session, representatives of the participating unions presented brief reports highlighting their activities, key issues, and challenges faced in their respective states, followed by an open discussion.
On the second day, the session was chaired by Khomdram Ratan, advisor of UPF, and moderated by Surjit S Thokchom.
Deliberations centred on the need to establish a common platform for Manipuri students' bodies across the Northeast.
A major outcome of the convention was the unanimous resolution to form a unified body named the United North East Manipuri Students' Union (UNEMSU), comprising student organisations from different states of the region.
It was resolved that three members from each state unit would be nominated to an ad hoc executive committee of the new body.
The committee will be headed by AMSU president Lukram Malangba as chairperson, with Priyalini Rajkumari, Shagolshem Aruket Singha, and Kangabam Subhojit as vice-chairpersons.
Kangabam Subhojit will also serve as the convenor.
The convention also unanimously adopted a framework of objectives for UNEMSU, including: evolving a historically inspired and constitutionally valid vision for Manipuri communities, across the Northeast; working collectively to address common concerns; extending mutual support for statespecific issues; promoting socio-cultural, political, and economic interests of the Manipuri people settled in different North-Eastern regions; and resolving any issues and problems arising out of the conflict of interest within the community.
The convention concluded with words of encouragement from Khomdram Ratan.
