Imphal, September 02 2025:
A delegation of the High Court Bar Association of Manipur (HCBAM) recently met Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai in New Delhi, urging them to fill the two vacant Judge posts at the Manipur High Court and increase the Court's Judge strength from five to seven.
Speaking to the media in this regard at the High Court complex at Mantripukhri today, HCBAM president Senior Advocate Naorem Kumarjit said that they made the demand considering the plight of litigants in seeking legal help.
Saying that the Manipur High Court has always had a vacant post since its establishment, he noted that the Court currently has only three Judges.
Kumarjit added that the Judge vacancies have led to a backlog of cases, ultimately delaying justice.
Advocates are often blamed by litigants for delays, he said.
The Senior Advocate stated that they met the Union Law and Justice Minister and the CJI in New Delhi on August 25 and 26, respectively, and apprised them of the issue.
A representation each was also submitted.
A similar representation was also submitted to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on August 18, he said.
They had urged both to fill the two vacant Judge posts at the Manipur High Court and increase the Court's judge strength from five to seven, Kumarjit said and added that the CJI mentioned that the process to fill the vacant posts is currently underway.
The CJI also assured that he would look into increasing the Manipur High Court's Judge strength to seven once a proposal is received from the Ministry, he said.
The Senior Advocate said they have informed the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Justice K Somashekar, about their visit to New Delhi.
He also said that they met Supreme Court Judges Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar during their stay and briefed them on the vacancies at the Manipur High Court.
