Imphal, May 02 2025:
A delegation of All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO) called on Governor AK Bhalla yesterday and submitted a memorandum that highlighted concerns about the current situation in Manipur.
The memorandum noted that over 450 Churches and several institutions of other faiths were burned, destroyed, or vandalized in both the hills and valley during the crisis, said a press release issued by AMCO president Rev L Simon Raomai.
Out of the 450 Churches destroyed, 253 belonged to the Meitei Christian minority community, it said and added that an atmosphere of intimidation and fear still persists, preventing Meitei Christians from holding worship services freely and peacefully even today.
AMCO said that some destroyed Church sites have been repurposed as local grounds, ponds, etc, instead of restoring them.
AMCO appealed to the Governor to ensure the protection of Freedom of Religion, as guaranteed by the Constitution and international covenants.
It demanded a creation of a conducive atmosphere where people of all religions can practice their faith without fear or intimidation.
By upholding the law, AMCO said that the authorities, particularly in Manipur and India, would enhance their prestige in the international community.
AMCO prayed to the Almighty for His intervention to heal the broken hearts of the suffering people and facilitate peaceful co-existence of all communities in 'our beautiful land, Sana leibak Manipur!' .
