UG cadres accused in multiple cases held

Imphal, March 01 2011: Two KCP cadres reportedly involved in multiple cases of bomb attacks, firing attacks and murders have been apprehended by security forces along with arms.

The two accused were paraded before media persons at Commando complex today along with arms and documents seized from them.

Briefing media persons about the arrest, Imphal West DSP (Commando) Sarangthem Ibomcha said that acting on specific tip off given by 23 AR that some KCP cadres were planning to carry out a grenade attack, a combined team of 116 Bn BSF, 5 AR and Imphal West commandos including himself were conducting frisking and checking near Oriental College gate at around 10.30 pm yesterday.

The whole operation was carried out under the supervision of Imphal West Additional SP Dr AK Jhaljit.

The combined security team apprehended a man together with a Chinese hand grenade.

The man was riding a scooter (Honda Activa) .

DSP Ibomcha identified the apprehended person as one Thingbaijam Chitaranjit alias Tangba (38) of Heirangoithong Awang Maibam Leikai.

Acting on his disclosure, one Thingbaijam Somorkanta alias Tomcha who is a neighbour of Chitaranjit was also pulled up at about 10 this morning.

Both Chitaranjit and Somorkanta were working under KCP leaders, Thingujam (O) Sorojini (37) w/o Sabhas Dev Burman and Malemnganba of Heirangoithong Awang Maibam Leikai, Ibomcha said.

The DSP said that the arrested duo were involved in the killing of Laithangbam Ranbir of Heirangoithong Mutum Leirak at Canchipur near Catholic School in the night of January 28 .

Chitaranjit and his neighbour Lourembam Poncha were the men behind the grenade attack at the residence of PHED engineer Thokchom Lokeshore at Tera Tongbram Leikai last month.

Chitaranjit and Somorkanta were also involved in another grenade attack at the home of Yurembam Gram Panchayat Pradhan Laishram (O) Chaobihal.

The man who lobbed a hand grenade at the Lamphel quarters of BDO Ranjit was Chitaranjit.

Chitaranjit and late Ranbir extorted Rs 80,000 from a brick-field located at Pangei after firing a single shot.

They were also responsible for setting ablaze a Maruti van at Ningombam.

Chitaranjit together with Sorojini served a demand note to a stone-crusher farm located at Pheidinga.

Somorkanta and Poncha were involved in a grenade attack at the residence of a Pradhan at Lilong Chajing Karam.

Somorkanta in cahoot with Sorojini served another demand letter to the Pratap Talkies.

Saying that Sorojini and Poncha could not be pulled up yet, DSP Ibomcha informed that further investigation is on with the registration of a case.

Altogether four Chinese hand grenades, 13 live rounds of 9 mm, 23 live rounds of 7.65 calibre, two live rounds of long range cartridge, seven demand letters of KCP, one Honda Activa and one mobile handset were recovered from Chitaranjit and Somorkanta, he added.
