25 years RI for rape convict

Binny Ngangom, Special Judge of POCSO Ukhrul on Monday sentenced rape convict K Ramyo Shimrei to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment.
K Ramyo Shimrei (61) of Lunghar Village in Ukhrul district was convicted on April 24 by the same Court for raping two minors for a period of time from July 27, 2018 to August 2, 2018 somewhere in Ukhrul district.
During the sentence hearing, the Court heard the submission of Special PP Unison Duidang and the defense counsel.
Convict K Ramyo Shimrei was produced before the Court through video conferencing wherein he submitted that he is a poor old man and he had already spent six years in judicial custody.
The Special PP, on the other hand, submitted that the convict has committed a heinous crime against two innocent minors and that he does not deserve any leniency in imposing sentence.
The Special PP prayed that the rape convict be given life imprisonment to under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012 .
Per contra, the defense counsel stated that the convict had made a mistake while he was drunk.
The defence counsel prayed before the Court to release the convict on humanitarian grounds.
The Court after hearing the submissions of the Special PP and the defence counsel sentenced the rape convict to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment.
