Issues besetting State highlighted

The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has raised critical issues confronting Manipur including illegal immigration, restrictions on free movement along National Highways, inability of internally displaced persons to return to their homes, demolition of Manipuri Rajbari at Shillong and the collapse of the State's economy during a three day general council meeting of the North East Students' Organisation (NESO).
AMSU, in a press release issued by its publicity and information secretary Serto Rengneier Kom, said that NESO general council meeting commenced on October 26 at Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh.
The meeting hosted by All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) was participated by six students from Manipur led AMSU president Lukram Malangba Meitei, it said.
AMSU further stated that it presented data on the abnormal population growth and unauthorised villages in certain districts, the shrinkage of forest lands, and poppy plantations during the meeting.
During the meeting, representatives of member organisations of NESO stood in solidarity with the people of Manipur, who have been enduring the crisis for over two years, it said and added that some member organisations proposed visiting Manipur to urge the relevant authorities to restore normalcy.
AMSU further stated that the NESO meeting also discussed broader issues affecting the North East States, including illegal immigration and the courses being opened at State and Central Universities.
Member organisations raised concerns specific to their respective States as well as common issues during the meeting, pledging to stand united in times of crisis, it said.
AMSU stated that NESO will decide on the initiatives it plans to undertake and hold meetings in some States following the general council meeting.
