Imphal, August 25 2025:
The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Akampat, has launched an Artificial Intelligence Mission Laboratory (AIML), a first-of-its-kind initiative in Manipur.
This lab started providing students with hands-on experience in AI applications free of cost from July 1 last, considering how AI has evolved to transform industries and revolutionize problem-solving.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Dr Yumnam Jayenta, Executive Director of NIELIT, Akampat, stated that the laboratory was established as part of an initiative by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.
He also mentioned that the Government of India provided the computer sets and technologies for setting up the AI lab.
Saying that around 320 students enrolled for AI studies in the first batch of the initiative at NIELIT, free of cost, he added that NIELIT offers AI courses ranging from one to three months.
He announced that NIELIT, Akampat, will be offering AI courses ranging from diploma to PhD programmes.
Dr Jayenta said that the application of AI has become increasingly crucial in sectors such as healthcare and agriculture as well as in law enforcement.
He said that AI can analyze satellite and drone imagery, soil data, and weather patterns to provide insights on optimal crop management, irrigation, and fertilization, leading to increased yields.
Additionally, AI can also detect pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies, enabling farmers to mitigate crop losses, he said.
Dr Jayenta also mentioned that AI can be utilized to detect and diagnose diseases in the healthcare sector more rapidly.
Emphasising the importance of educating people from all walks of life, including seniors, about the basics of AI, he appealed to everyone to visit NTELIT, Akampat, and participate in a short-term, free course on AI applications, lasting just one to three days.
He further stated that individuals can also reach out to NIELIT staff to organize AI awareness programmes at their local schools or colleges.
Dr Jayenta noted that AI will continue to evolve and revolutionize industries and security management.
According to him, the productive use of AI can significantly boost Manipur's economy by implementing projects faster.
He expressed hope that Manipuri youths can capitalize on AI opportunities to work without having to leave the State and contribute to the State's growth and development.
Dr Jayenta, however, cautioned that misusing AI applications to steal personal data is a punishable offence under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 .
