Imphal, September 22 2025:
The Uripok Apunba Lup (UAL) and the Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup (UNAL) have decided to keep a watchful eye on RIMS and its services.
Speaking to media persons at Imphal Public Library, Uripok Sorbon Thingel this morning, UAL general secretary Samom Dhruva, speaking on behalf of both UAL and UNAL, said that RIMS has been caught in the storm of a huge controversy after four patients brought to the hospital for treatment died successively.
This has proved to be a serious setback to all the efforts to upgrade RIMS to the level of AIIMS.
As the location of RIMS falls within the jurisdiction of UAL and UNAL, the two bodies have an obligation to keep a watchful eye on the functioning of RIMS, Dhruva said.
He said that nobody knows which system of patient care is followed in RIMS .
It is time to let the public know whether diagnosis and treatment of patients is done by interns, PG students, senior residents or specialists, he said.
It is also time to monitor how the administration of RIMS is done.
The RIMS authority ought to come out with a statement on the back to back death of four patients recently, he said.
It is understandable deaths may occur at RIMS or any other hospital.
At the same time, it must also be understood that it is natural for the aggrieved patient parties to target hospital authorities and doctors if the patients died due to negligence or laxity on the part of medical professionals, he said.
The professions of doctors, nurses and paramedics are highly respected.
People come to hospitals for diagnosis and treatment.
Patients put complete trust in doctors, Dhruva said.
But there are some doctors who have no sense of discipline or politeness.
These doctors often speak in harsh tones to patients including senior citizens who are as old as their own parents or older.
They also do not communicate properly with patient parties.
There is a popular saying that doctors working in Government hospitals are arrogant while those working in private hospitals generally are gentle and polite.
This must be true, the UAL general secretary remarked.
"We fear that RIMS may become a house of killing if we do not keep a watchful eye on its activities.
Soon people may feel afraid to take patients to RIMS.
At that time, there will be only doctors, nurses and students at the so-called premier medical institute", he said.
In order to avoid such an undesirable situation, UAL and UNAL will start keeping a watchful eye on the services of RIMS, Dhruva said.
He said that they will soon talk with the RIMS authority in this regard.
He also appealed to the Teachers' and Medical Officers' Association, RIMS to call off their agitation of shutting down OPDs, emergency services, routine OTs and PMEs.
Dhruva further appealed to the Indian Medical Association, Manipur State Branch to withdraw their proposed agitation of shutting down all hospitals and clinics from Wednesday morning till Thursday morning.
