Imphal, June 19 2025:
Lamlai Assembly Constituency MLA Kh Ibomcha today inspected the condition of the currently non-functioning Dolaithabi Barrage which suffered significant damage during the recent floods.
Notably, on May 31, floodwaters washed away gate no 4 of Dolaithabi Barrage leading to cessation of all operations till date.
During the inspection visit, Kh Ibomcha also instructed the concerned officials to determine what immediate measures can be taken up with respect to the currently inoperative Dolaithabi Barrage.
Kh Ibomcha said that beyond the paddyfields, of Khundrakpam AC, Dolaithabi Barrage supplies water to the agricultural fields at Lousangkhong, Sekta and Pungdongbam in Lamlai AC.
Built over Iril, the largest river in Imphal East district, the barrage also helps in maintaining the water level of the river during dry season.
The functioning of the barrage has been strictly monitored as many water supply projects would stop operating if the Iril River dried up.
To ensure proper functioning of the barrage, the Dolaithabi Barrage Development Committee was also constituted, consisting of citizens from Pukhao to Pungdongbam, shared the Lamlai AC MLA.
He also assured to give greater attention to the Dolaithabi Barrage.
Meanwhile, Thangjam Biren, president, Dolaithabi Barrage Development Committee lauded the MLA for his significant contribution in forming the Committee as well as serving as the advisor.
According to Dolaithabi Barrage Division-I EE N Remei, three officials are assigned to keep a watch over the barrage.
However, as security forces are allegedly staying at the building which served as their office, they are facing difficulties in finding accommodation close to the barrage.
The process to reclaim the building from the security forces is underway.
After the retirement of the staff who used to monitor the barrage gates, absence of new proficient staff led to the breaking of the shutter on May 31, he claimed.
Stating that the only solution is to install a new gate/shutter, he said that their efforts are focused on containing the water until then.
