Imphal, June 06 2025:
Members of the People's Progressive Alliance Manipur (PPAM) stormed the Manipur State Legislative Assembly today.
PPAM stated that they had submitted a letter to the Assembly Secretary on May 6, requesting a report on the annual perks and budgetary allocations received by MLAs and making it public, but had not received a satisfactory response so far.
Security personnel blocked the protesters at the Assembly gate, denying them entry into the complex.
Speaking to the media, Imagi Meira president Thokchom Sujata said that all the 59 MLAs continue to receive perks and benefits despite the dire situation in Manipur, which has resulted in widespread suffering and a sluggish State economy.
She demanded that a comprehensive report detailing the benefits and entitlements received by the MLAs be compiled and made public.
Stating that they had come to the State Assembly to discuss their demands due to the lack of response from the relevant authorities, she added that the public has a right to know the entitlements of the MLAs, who are supposed to serve them.
Sujata asserted that they would now file a Right to Information (RTI) petition against the Assembly Secretary and other officials concerned, as they had allegedly refused to provide the information demanded.
Continuing that the State Assembly must function efficiently to bring peace to Manipur, she urged the public to initiate a movement to ensure the State Assembly functions smoothly.
She also appealed to the people to do away with the culture of electing leaders for personal benefits.
