Imphal/Moirang, March 31 2026:
Denouncing failure to remove 26 Assistant Professors appointed by the Governing Body (GB) of Kumbi College, volunteers of the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) have locked the office of the Principal of the college today.
Speaking to media persons, AMSU vice-president Naorem Wangamba alleged that the appointments were made in clear violation of established norms.
He stated that the Governing Body had itself admitted to appointing the teachers on a contractual basis with a promise to conduct a Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) at a later stage, which is "beyond the rules" and "unacceptable" .
Wangamba further maintained that the recruitment process violated guidelines laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Directorate of Education (University & Higher Education) .
He pointed out that mandatory procedures such as issuing proper notifications, publishing of advertisements, and conducting a DPC were not followed in the recruitment.
Urging immediate corrective measures, the AMSU leader called on the college authorities concerned to address the issue without delay.
He suggested that the removal of the teachers, followed by a fresh recruitment process in accordance with prescribed norms, would be the appropriate course of action.
He also appealed to nominees of Manipur University and the Directorate of Education (U), who are members of the Governing Body, to take responsibility and take up corrective measures.
Wangamba further claimed that the appointments were neither discussed nor approved in a Governing Body meeting.
Maintaining a firm stance, he warned that intensified agitation will be launched if the matter is not resolved at the earliest.
He asserted that the Governing Body's chairman and secretary must be held accountable and cautioned that the names of the appointed teachers could be made public, advising the teachers concerned to step down voluntarily.
Meanwhile, the Kumbi College Students' Union has strongly condemned the locking of the Principal's office, terming it detrimental to the academic environment.
Addressing a press conference, the union's general secretary, Kh Nongpoknganba, expressed concern that such actions could adversely affect students, particularly those preparing for their 7th semester practical examinations.
He described the incident as "unfortunate", stating that locking an educational institution hinders students' academic progress.
The student union appealed to AMSU and other organisations concerned to refrain from such actions in the future and urged for resolving the issues through constructive dialogues.
The press conference was also attended by other office bearers of the union, including finance secretary Nganba Amom, social and cultural secretary Bidyasagar Khumanthem, games and sports secretary Amom Deny, and debate and extension secretary Oinam Rohit, among others.
