Manipur University hosts National workshop on IPRs

Manipur University successfully hosted a National Workshop on "Intellectual Property Rights" at its Court Hall from March 28-29, 2024 .
The workshop organised by the School of Life Sciences; Manipur University marked a significant stride toward enlightening academic and scientific communities about the value of safeguarding intellectual creations, said a release.
The inaugural function held on March 28 was attended by Professor N Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor, MU and Professor GKN Chhetry, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, MU as the chief guest and president.
The workshop began with the felicitation of dignitaries present by Dr Sivakumar Vijayaraghavalu, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, MU followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr Kshetrimayum Birla Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, MU.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof N Lokendra Singh emphasized the university's commitment to fostering creativity and innovation.
He also stressed on the importance of protecting indigenous knowledge and commercializing it, referring to Manipur's diverse rice types documented during the British Raj and the unique Manipuri handlooms.
He advocated for the preservation and promotion of the region's dance, art forms, and culinary heritage, particularly its fish dishes, to future generations.
Professor GKN Chhetry shared his insights on the crucial role of IPRs within scientific research and academia.
Dr L Minaketan Singh, Director, Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC), gave a comprehensive briefing about MASTEC's activities and initiatives on behalf of M Yaiskul Meitei.
He elaborated on the council's ongoing efforts to propel scientific progress and innovation in the state and MASTEC's role in educating the community about IPRs.
Prof N Mohilal Meitei, Director, College Development Council, MU, highlighted the critical role of IPRs in combating biopiracy while Dr Yumnam Premananda Singh, Head, Department of Law, illuminated the intricacies of IPRs.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr S Sureshkumar Singh, Associate Prof, Department of Botany.
Meanwhile, the valedictory function was held on March 29 at the Annexure Building of the Department of Life Sciences (Zoology).
It was attended by Prof GKN Chhetry; Prof Debananda Singh Ningthoujam, Head, Department of Biochemistry; Prof N Mohilal Meitei; Dr Potshangbam Nongdam Puren Meetei, Head, Department of Biotechnology; and Prof Th Binoy Singh as presidium members.
The inaugural & valedictory programmes were moderated by Dr Heikham Evelin, Associate Prof, Department of Botany.
The function culminated with a vote of thanks by Dr Salam Himika Devi, Guest Faculty, Department of Zoology.
