Imphal, August 28 2025:
Lok Sabha MP Dr Bimol Akoijam has stated that the Central Government's inaction on critical issues affecting Manipur, such as illegal immigration and drug problems, is the core issue of the State.
He made the statement at the inaugural function of a 2-day National seminar held at the Court Hall of Manipur University under the theme "Security, Trade and Development : Reimagining Indo Myanmar Trade Amidst Regional Conflicts" .
Addressing the function as chief guest, Dr Bimol said that people of Manipur need to understand the core issue besetting the State and adopt a far sighted vision.
He noted that Manipur's historical relationship with South East Asia, which dates back to early times and lasted until the 19th century, was very different from its current relationship.

The MP also said that the benefits of the Act East Policy may not reach the people of Manipur and as such it warrants closer examination.
He questioned whether Manipur would be reduced to merely a transit point for Indo-Myanmar trade, emphasizing the need for a more in-depth examination.
"Manipur is a geo-strategic land, so we need a geostrategic calculation," Dr Bimol said.
On Manipur's core issue, he said the Centre's inaction on illegal immigration and drug problems is the root cause of many problems which the State is facing.
The MP emphasized that greater focus should be placed on the Act East Policy to ensure its benefits reach Manipur.
To a media query, Dr Bimol stated that blocking people's access to their villages is a violation of their right to life and accused the Govt of attempting to downplay the Manipur crisis.
Which law prohibits people from entering their villages and on what grounds is the Government engaging in talks with those obstructing free movement on National Highways?, he questioned.
MU Vice Chancellor Prof N Lokendro, Dean of Social Science (MU) Prof Memcha Loitongbam and Head of South East Asian Studies Dept Prof Chinglen Maisnam also attended the opening ceremony of seminar organised by Manipur University's South East Asian Studies in association with Kha Manipur College, Kakching; Kamakhya Pemton College, Hiyangthang and College Development Council of Manipur University.
