Imphal, June 25 2025:
After a prolonged absence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit crisis-ridden Manipur next month (July), marking his first trip to the State since the crisis began on May 3, 2023 .
Sources from within the State BJP however said that there is nothing official as yet and added that there have been instances earlier too when the Prime Minister was supposedly set to come to Manipur, back in the days when there was a popular Government here.
The Prime Minister's last visit to Manipur dates back to January 4, 2019, when he laid the foundation stones for various projects during a public rally held at Hapta Kangjeibung in Imphal, four years before the current crisis erupted in 2023.According to well-placed sources, the itinerary of the Prime Minister is likely to include a trip to Churachandpur apart from Imphal where he will attend a meeting.
Preparations are on in full swing for the Prime Minister's potential visit, with works underway to construct a helipad in Churachandpur and repair roads, the sources said.
While the exact date of the Prime Minister's visit to Manipur remains unconfirmed, sources indicate that during his trip, he is likely to inaugurate several completed projects including the Civil Secretariat, as well as announce new initiatives for the State.
The sources further stated that the Centre has begun compiling reports from various Government Depts on completed projects and potential new initiatives in Manipur, with the Chief Secretary playing a key role likely in preparing for the high profile visit.
It may be mentioned that the Prime Minister last addressed the Manipur issue during a Parliament session on July 3, 2024, when he informed the Rajya Sabha that violence in Manipur was steadily declining and efforts were continuously being made to normalise the situation in Manipur.
He had also urged Opposition leaders to put aside politics and cooperate with the Govt to restore peace in Manipur.
Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13, 2025, with the State Assembly placed under suspended animation, following the resignation of N Biren as the Chief Minister on February 9.The visit will, if it actuates, come amid the questions raised by different political parties and keen observers of the situation here, why the Prime Minister has not deemed it necessary to visit the State after the crisis erupted on May 3, 2023 .
Over 250 people have been killed in the course of the violence while thousands are still languishing in the relief centres set up across the length and breadth of Manipur.
The National Highways have remained cut off for the Meiteis and the free movement from March 8 call issued by Union Home Minister Amit Shah had to be rolled back hastily after the Kuk-Chin-Zo people opposed the call tooth and nail on National Highway-2.One man was killed in the confrontation with the security forces back then.
Manipur is set to go for Assembly elections in 2027 .
