The active cases of COVID-19 from Manipur have risen to two after a 58 year old woman from Ghari in Imphal West tested positive for the contagious disease.
The first woman who tested positive is currently in Hyderabad.
According to reports received by The Sangai Express, the owner of a hostel at Ghari, where a student who tested positive for COVID-19 and is now in Telangana, has herself tested positive.
Her sample tested positive yesterday during contact tracing.
Apart from showing signs of a cough and cold, the woman doesn't exhibit significant symptoms of COVID-19 and she has been instructed to undergo home isolation, said the reports.
The reports further stated that none of the family members of the student from Bishnupur, currently in Telangana, tested positive during contact tracing.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Health Department officials said they have notified authorities in Telangana to conduct contact tracing and other protocols for those who accompanied the COVID-19 positive student from Bishnupur.
Saying that sub-commit-tees have been constituted to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak and they have been instructed to conduct contact tracing, suggest isolation, and carry out other surveillance activities, the officials said they have also instructed health officials in all districts to remain vigilant and take necessary actions to prevent an outbreak.
The officials further stated that arrangements are underway to appoint a spokesperson soon who will provide regular updates on COVID-19 .
Continuing that a testing center is available at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport for passengers who wish to get tested for COVID-19, the officials said that undergoing the test is not mandatory for everyone.
Meanwhile, the fresh spike in Covid infections continues in India as the number of active cases in the country stood at 7,154 on Thursday morning, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Three new Covid-related deaths were reported since Thursday morning, two in Maharashtra and one in Madhya Pradesh, taking the total number of deaths this year to 77 .
In a welcome respite, over 8,000 people have recovered from the infection so far this year.
Worst-hit States amid rise in Covid cases: While a slight uptick in active cases was recorded in almost all states, Kerala continues to report the highest number of Covid-19 cases in 2025, with the active caseload standing at 2,223 on Thursday morning.
According to Centre's Covid-19 dashboard, states like Gujarat, West Bengal, Delhi and Maharashtra have also reported fairly high number of active cases this year.
The recent surge in Covid-19 cases across the country is driven by new Omicron sub-variants such as JN.1, NB.
1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC, with increased transmissibility but milder symptoms, as compared to other variants.
The WHO currently classifies these as "Variants Under Monitoring" - not of concern yet, but requiring caution.
Meanwhile, SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, has not disappeared, but it no longer behaves like an unpredictable emergency - rather, it has become part of a recurring cycle of illnesses, similar to the flu.
